Sausage Buns (සොසේජ් බන්ස්)

to activate the yeast

12 Grams Yeast
1 Tablespoon Sugar
160 Millilitre Milk (lukewarm)

to make the bun

300 Grams Plain flour
1 Teaspoon Salt
35 Grams Butter (at room temperature)
2 Medium Egg (1 for egg wash)
8 Medium Sausages (pre cooked or hot dogs)


activate the yeast

Step 1
Add yeast and sugar into a small bowl then add lukewarm milk & give it a gentle stir and set a side for about 5 minutes until yeast activate (form and bubble up).

to make the bun

Step 2
Add flour to a mixer bowl. Then add salt,butter, egg and  activated yeast. Using a wooden spoon stir vigorously start from the centre and working towards the sides of the bowl.
Step 3
Once its get start to clump, mix well by using hand to get rid of any lumps. Transfer the dough onto a flat surface. Knead gently until the dough is silky and elastic for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Step 4
Once the kneading is done, shape the dough into a ball. Place it into a large bowl and cover with a cling film or a damp kitchen towel. Let the dough rise in a warm place until it has double in size (for about 30 minutes).
Step 5
When the dough is ready, remove the cling film cover. Use your fist to punch it down, to eliminate any air bubbles. Transfer the dough onto a flat surface. Then flaten out a bit & cut into 8 pieces.
Step 6
Take one piece of dough and roll into a rope. Then, By using a wooden dough roller flaten out dough a bit. Gently wrap it around the sausage, place it in a lined baking tray.
Step 7
Repeat these rolling steps with rest of dough pieces Place them in a lined baking tray and apply the beaten egg on top and sides of the buns by using a brush.
Step 8
Place the baking tray in the middle section of a pre heated oven at 177 C (gas mark 4/350 degrees F). Bake them for about 10 minutes until buns get light golden brown colour. Take them out of the oven & rest them for about 10 minutes before serve. Enjoy !
